About Mathematics (OL)

Mathematics is a fundamental subject at both O/L and A/L levels in Sri Lanka. At O/L, it tests core arithmetic, algebra, and geometry skills. At A/L, Combined Mathematics is one of the most demanding subjects, covering advanced pure and applied mathematics required for engineering and science degrees.

What You Study in Mathematics

  • Algebra — equations, inequalities, polynomials, matrices
  • Calculus — differentiation, integration, differential equations
  • Trigonometry — identities, equations, applications
  • Coordinate Geometry — lines, circles, conics
  • Mechanics — kinematics, dynamics, statics (Applied Maths)
  • Statistics — probability, distributions, hypothesis testing

Examination Structure

Paper I (Pure Mathematics)3 hours

10 compulsory questions covering algebra, calculus, trigonometry, and coordinate geometry.

Paper II (Applied Mathematics)3 hours

Questions on Mechanics and Statistics. Students answer questions from both sections.

What is the difference between O/L Maths and A/L Combined Maths?

Is a calculator allowed in A/L Combined Mathematics?
