About Chemistry (AL)

Chemistry is a core subject in the Sri Lankan A/L Biological Science and Physical Science streams. It bridges the gap between physics and biology and is essential for students aspiring to study medicine, pharmacy, chemical engineering, or biotechnology at Sri Lankan universities.

What You Study in Chemistry

  • Physical Chemistry — atomic structure, bonding, thermodynamics, kinetics
  • Inorganic Chemistry — periodic table, transition metals, reactions
  • Organic Chemistry — hydrocarbons, functional groups, reaction mechanisms
  • Analytical Chemistry — volumetric analysis, chromatography
  • Industrial Chemistry — manufacture of important chemicals
  • Environmental Chemistry — pollution, green chemistry

Examination Structure

Paper I2 hours

Multiple choice questions testing knowledge across all three branches of chemistry.

Paper II3 hours

Structured questions requiring detailed answers, chemical equations, and calculations.

Practical3 hours

Laboratory examination including volumetric analysis (titrations) and organic chemistry preparations.

Study Tips for Chemistry

  1. 1Master chemical equation balancing early — it appears in every paper
  2. 2Learn organic reaction mechanisms step by step, not by memorization
  3. 3Practice mole calculations daily until they become automatic
  4. 4Use color-coded notes for organic functional groups and their reactions
  5. 5Complete titration calculations from past papers weekly
  6. 6Review inorganic chemistry systematically by period/group

Frequently Asked Questions

View all FAQs
What are the hardest topics in A/L Chemistry?
Most students find Organic Chemistry reaction mechanisms and Physical Chemistry thermodynamics calculations the most challenging. Early and consistent practice with past paper questions on these topics is essential.
How many marks does the Chemistry practical carry?
The practical examination is a significant component of the A/L Chemistry grade. It is conducted separately and tests volumetric analysis skills and organic chemistry practical techniques.
Are Chemistry model papers available on Ape Danuma?
Yes, A/L Chemistry model papers, past papers, and short notes are available in Sinhala, Tamil, and English mediums, covering all major topics in the current syllabus.
